Currencies and
coins, both
ancient and
modern, have become key points of interest in the auction market, with some surprisingly fetching millions of dollars. In particular, a flurry of activity has surrounded historical
U.S. coins, such as the 1917-S Walking Liberty Half Dollar and rare early gold states. Notably, an
ultra-rare 300-year-old coin is anticipated to fetch up to £12k at a London auction. An 1804 silver coin even set a record auction price of $6 million. A
long-lost silver coin was also auctioned off and expected to be worth around $5 million.
Coin collections and lots at these sales often consist of
unique and
rare coins, such as the seven space-flown Sacagawea gold dollars. Other than historical pieces, several
diamond-encrusted
24-karat-gold coins and bullions, estimated to be worth more than $4 million, were also part of these auctions.
Paper currencies, including the Olive Sprig Collection of Palestine Mandate Paper Money, have also found their way into auctions. Interestingly, some stacks of rare
pennies from Philly and Denver alone amassed over $16 million.
These auctions have also served a philanthropic purpose, with the Salvation Army and the Pennsylvania Treasury auctioning off specific items for fundraising efforts.
