AUCTION Coin plays integral role in monumental, record-breaking coin sales

AUCTION Coin has had several notable events in the press. A collection belonging to James A. Stack, Sr., including over $10 million in rare U.S. gold coins, had its second part up for auction. Highlights included a Spanish gold coin dating back to 1609, which broke the European record at auction. Rare coins, like a gold one buried for 50 years, have also garnered huge sums, with expectations of fetching up to $2.5 million. More than 200 coins were estimated to reach £30,000 at auction. A 24-karat gold coin, encrusted with diamonds, was expected to fetch over $4 million. An unknown 1804 dollar sold for $6 million at Stack’s Bowers Auction. A 'King of Silver Dollars’ coin could fetch over $1M at an auction. Space-flown Sacagawea dollar coins fetched over $500k at auction. 'Omega’ pennies fetched over $16.76 million in Stack’s Bowers Galleries Auction. OzA powerful 'Gold Giant’ coin went up for £2.5 million at the second Traveller Collection auction. The last US cents sold for $16.7 million, symbolizing the end of the road for penny production in the country. Heritage Auctions and NGSA carried out some of these successful sales. Stack’s Bowers Auctions, in particular, showcased rarities drawing much attention and incredible prices.
