Circle, the issuer of the
USDC Stablecoin, has been at the center of controversy after a $285 million hack on
Drift, leading to some criticism of their practices. This hasn't hindered their ambitions, however, as they've unveiled a new token,
cirBTC, aimed at providing Bitcoin with more utility. On the legal front, the GENIUS Act and the CLARITY Act are both set to provide stability and clarity to stablecoins. But questions of compliance and prompt action have been raised, particularly by
ZachXBT, who accuses Circle of slow responses and compliance failures involving USDC. A key development among stablecoins has been the significant growth in
USDC, which has started to steadily gain market share against
USDT, most notably with a new deposit spike of $778M. In other relevant news, Coinbase cleared a pivotal regulatory hurdle enhancing their stablecoin operations and Nigeria has emerged as the largest global market for USDT and USDC. The USDC is also being utilized in numerous integrations, like with Mastercard and Stripe being the most noteworthy. Regrettably, the Circle has also been accused of missing legitimate hacks while freezing lawful wallets and their response to the $285 million Drift hack hasn't been warmly received.
